Where to Eat at Lake Skadar

Lake food here is freshwater food: carp from the open lake, bleak dried and fried whole, eel smoked over wood, all served with local olive oil, cheese and the red Vranac wine grown just south of the water.

Restaurant Savina Luka, Rijeka Crnojevića

Our own restaurant, run by the Ražnatović family for more than twenty years, sits right on the river by the New Bridge where our boats are moored. Fresh fish from the lake, a terrace over the water, free private parking, and opening hours from 13:00 to 21:00 from May to November. Guests usually combine lunch with a tour: eat before you leave, or come back hungry.

What to order

Grilled or stewed carp is the classic — firm, mild, best with a squeeze of lemon. Eel, smoked or grilled whole, is the lake's delicacy and worth the price. Small bleak, fried crisp or marinated, arrive as a starter and disappear quickly. Ask about the catch rather than the menu; what is good today is what came out of the water this morning.

  • Carp — grilled, stewed or pan-fried, around €10–€15.
  • Eel — smoked or grilled, around €15–€18.
  • Bleak — fried crisp or marinated, around €8–€10.
  • Local extras — sheep's cheese, olives, smoked ham, Vranac wine.

Village taverns and wine

Around the lake, small family konobas in Virpazar, Karuč and the shore villages serve the same repertoire with their own touches. Behind Virpazar the Crmnica wine region grows Vranac, Montenegro's signature red; several family cellars offer tastings with cheese and smoked meats and a view down over the lake.
