Spring: April and May
The lake is high, the hills are green and migration is in full flow. Dalmatian pelicans are on the water, herons and egrets feed in the shallows, and the canyon is at its lushest. Air temperatures are comfortable rather than hot, and the water is still cool for swimming.
Summer: June to August
Freshwater warms up more than the sea, so by July the lake sits between 25 and 27°C — swimming is the highlight, and every tour includes a swim stop. Water lilies carpet the channels through these months. Midday is hot and bright; take a morning or late-afternoon departure and you get cooler air, calmer water and far better photographs.
Autumn: September and October
The best balance of the year. Water is still 22 to 24°C in September, autumn migration brings the birds back through, the light turns golden and the dock is quiet. October is cooler, 18 to 21°C in the water, with the clearest air of the season.
- For swimming: late June to early September.
- For birdwatching: April–May or September–October.
- For photography: May or September, early or late in the day.
- For value and quiet: May, June or late September.
Weather, wind and rain
Summer days are reliably sunny and calm in the morning; afternoon breezes can ripple the open lake. Spring and autumn bring occasional rain, and the region is one of the wetter parts of Europe in winter. If weather makes a tour unsafe we reschedule or refund — we never take guests out in conditions we would not take our own family out in.
