Staying in Rijeka Crnojevića
Rijeka Crnojevića is a village of roughly 300 people wrapped around a bend of the Crnojevića River, with old stone bridges, a handful of waterside terraces and almost no traffic after dark. Accommodation is small-scale: private apartments and rooms in village houses, most of them self-catering with a kitchenette and a bathroom, usually a few minutes' walk from the water.
There are only a few units in the village, so summer dates go early. If you want to stay here, book well ahead — and message us on WhatsApp if you would like a recommendation among the families we know locally. We run the boat tours and Restaurant Savina Luka, not the apartments, so what you get from us is an honest pointer rather than a sales pitch.
Virpazar, Podgorica or the coast
Virpazar, on the south-western side of the lake, is the transport hub: the Bar–Belgrade railway stops there and buses from Podgorica run through the day. It has more rooms, restaurants and a busier feel. Podgorica, about 25 minutes from Rijeka Crnojevića, has the widest choice of hotels and apartments and the airport nearby, and still works perfectly as a base for a morning on the lake.
Kotor and Budva are around 50 minutes away over the mountains through Cetinje. Plenty of guests come to us from the coast for a half-day and drive back the same afternoon — you simply lose the early-morning light.
- Rijeka Crnojevića — quietest, closest to the boats, very limited capacity.
- Virpazar — easiest without a car, more rooms, busier dock.
- Podgorica — most choice, airport nearby, 25 minutes by car.
- Kotor / Budva — beach holiday base, 50 minutes each way.
Why an overnight stay changes the day
Boats leave directly from Restaurant Savina Luka in Rijeka Crnojevića, where parking is free and private. Guests who sleep nearby take the first departure, when herons are still fishing in the reed channels and the canyon is in shade. By midday the light is flat and the water busier.
An overnight also lets you combine the viewpoint above the village, Pavlova Strana, with the same bend seen from inside the canyon on a boat — the two best views of the lake within a few hours of each other.

Frequently asked questions
Can you stay overnight in Rijeka Crnojevića?
Yes. The village has a small number of private apartments and rooms, mostly self-catering. Capacity is very limited in July and August, so book early.
Do you rent apartments?
No. We operate the private boat tours and Restaurant Savina Luka. We are happy to point you towards trusted places to stay in the village — just ask on WhatsApp.
Is it better to sleep at the lake or on the coast?
The coast is fine if the lake is one day of a beach holiday. If you want the early light, birdlife and an empty canyon, sleep at the lake or in Podgorica and take a morning tour.
