A village built on fishing

Karuč grew where a deep bay met a reliable spring. Families here lived on carp, bleak and eel, salting and smoking the catch for the markets inland. The Ottoman-era houses, stone quays and net stores are still standing, some restored, most quietly weathering. Only a few people remain year round.

Karučko oko, the blue eye

Behind the village a karst spring rises straight out of the rock into a round, astonishingly clear pool — the karučko oko, the eye of Karuč. Cold, deep and blue-green even in August, it is the reason the village exists and the reason many visitors come.

How to visit

There is no road, so a boat is the only way in. Our Karuč-bound tours run from Restaurant Savina Luka in Rijeka Crnojevića, through the river canyon and along the shore. It is a slow, quiet stop: walk the quay, look into the spring, talk to whoever is mending nets. Take your litter with you and remember people still live here.
